Seafood lovers in Málaga head to Pedregalejo
Situated only about 5km up the coast from downtown Málaga, Pedregalejo used to be an old fishing village. Although it has since become somewhat gentrified, there are no high-rise buildings or chic hotels here. Instead, the seafront is lined with old-style chiringuitos (beach restaurants), most of which are family-run, many of them for several generations. One thing’s for sure – nowhere on the Costa del Sol will you find fish that’s fresher or tapas that are more genuine.

El Cabra
Every restaurant in these parts has its specialty, and at El Cabra it’s the paella marinera (seafood paella), which those in the know say is the best in Málaga. El Cabra is one of the most famous chiringuitos on the Pedregalejo seafront, making it equally popular with both locals and tourists.

Pez Tomillo
While it may not be a traditional chiringuito, Pez Tomillo deserves a mention simply because its food is so outstanding. Having moved away from the traditional dishes favored by most of its neighbors, Pez Tomillo delights visitors by serving up its own brand of creative tapas on its sunny seaside terrace. House favorites include the black cod, the shrimp, and the mango salad.

El Lirio
This Pedregalejo favorite has been in the same family for three generations. Nowadays it’s run by sisters Franci and Pepi Galdeano Garcia, following in the footsteps of their father and grandfather before them. The house special is the deep-fried “hands” of boquerones (fresh anchovies), lovingly prepared by Pepi according to an original recipe created by her mother.

El Tintero
Although it’s situated slightly farther up the road (technically in El Palo, as opposed to Pedregalejo), no foodie guide to these parts would be complete without a mention of El Tintero, which is a veritable institution and hugely popular with the locals. There are no menus here – instead the waiters bring out huge platters of food, shouting out the names of the dishes, and the guests grab what they want. Top sellers include the gambas pil-pil, grilled swordfish, paella, and fried eggplant. It’s a steal too, with every plate priced at only €6.

Hermanos Muñoz
While most restaurants in these parts are authentic, none could be more so than Hermanos Muñoz. In addition to Bernardo Muñoz, who can be spotted grilling the mouthwateringly fresh sardines on the beach, the restaurant also employs his four brothers, a sister, and a string of cousins, children, and in-laws. The food is superb, the service welcoming, and the view magnificent. Visiting Hermanos Muñoz is really like being invited to someone’s house for a family dinner – except the house is on a beach … in Spain!
